Apples - 8/22/2018

Round, slightly bumpy

Stem tall

Smooth skin

Pale green with just the suggestion of rose

So many memories

Peeling them for pie

Cutting them up for snack

Peanut butter for a dip

Applesauce boiling in a pan

Gathering them in the orchard

Dicing them into a snicker salad

putting chunks in cast iron over a campfire

Sprinkled with cinnamon and cloves

Crisp and delicious

More for eating, less for decor

Sauce into jars

Pop pop popping of canning lid tops

Sweet and tart

Mealy and just about to turn 

Fragrant yet not so overpowering

Helping mom or grandma

Boxing them up for storing in the root cellar

finding the bruised ones in the yard

Giving those to the cows

Cows were not interested

Curious about how to coat with caramel

Giving them out at Halloween instead of candy

So many different varieties

Rome, Jonathon

Honey Crisp

Macintosh

Jonagold

Pink Lady my favorite

golden delicious

Why are red delicious called that, so not delicious

Granny Smith with salt

Pairs nicely with cheese

Bleu cheese spread with walnuts

slices of cheddar

Apple pie - with ice cream and velveeta - ooh gross

Juicy and tart

Feeling the skin

Looking for bruises or bumps

Checking out the size some apples come in

How did they get so large

What apples make the best pie

What make the best sauce

Why do they taste so good with spices

Making a baked apple in home ec

Trying it again and home and it didn’t turn out so good

Watching my grandfather at the cider press

drinking some of that cider - feeling it dribble down my chin

Warm, sticky, tart yet sweet

Wanting to try the handle

It is much to hard for me to turn

His large hand covers mine - and we turn it together

The smell of the apples as they are turned into cider

Taking the rest of the apple to the compost pile

Watching pieces drip from my hands into the pile

Gathering pieces of peel from the yard

Walking with bare feet on the warm and sticky grass

Feet brown from running around the farm

Going to the trees to see if I can climb higher 

More apples to be picked

Resting beneath the apple tree

Memory of a Photograph (written March 19 2019)

In this one you are about 20 years old.  You are holding a large floppy hat, your hair is blown from the wind, you have a smile that lights up your face, it is summer, but not in the middle of summer, as the grass hasn’t started browning from days of relentless heat.  You are wearing shorts and a long sleeved shirt, so I am pretty sure you have just come from the field.  There is a dog standing beside you and the large tree that holds the rope swing is so small.  You can just make out the entrace to the root cellar/tornado shelter behind you and then in the background you can make out the larger barn and the smaller sheds - everything is painted in the brighter blue.  I often wonder who took the photograph.  I am guessing it was grandpa - he was always the photographer.  I also am curious if you are pregnant with mom in the picture or not - but your face is not lined with the ups and downs of life with its hardship, grief, adventure, pain, happiness, love, and strength. New Year's Resolutions (1/10/2021)

Well, I landed on my goals, resolutions, and intentions for 2021. It was not easy and it did take me some time. At the beginning of the year I am often full of all sorts of ideas about how I would like the year to go. Many times I am looking at self improvement and making deals with myself about how this year will be different than the ones before. This time, after my post on 12/29/2020, I decided to sit will all of those whirling ideas and thoughts. Truth be told, I started thinking about things right around Winter Solstice. I would write things down and then sit with the ideas. I looked at 2020 with the help of my yoga instructor's New Years Exercise . I worked through 2020 on 12/31/2020 and then today, I set the space to work through the second half of the exercise - Clarify for 2021.
