Ideas for a Book

This was a prompt from a writing workshop I was in a year or so ago - I came up with the first 5 then, and added the rest while thinking about it today...

  1. Two sisters decide to take a trip around the world - but end up never leaving the physical space they are in because they are both in a coma
  2. A man in Spokane collects arrowheads and is contacted by a collector from Colorado that wants him to buy his collection so he can save a rubber farm in Mexico
  3. In the 1940s just before the War a young woman and her best friend set out to drive from Iowa to Bremerton Washington where she will marry her true love
  4. A young boy in Iowa dreams of big places and spaces and grows to never leave his farm - but has many wonderful adventures
  5. A girl growing up in a conservative christian household - how she navigates growing up and wanting to set out on her own - differences from those around her, experiences and types of jobs
  6. The oldest sister takes care of her siblings but never quite gets a life of her own (or to escape a life that could have been) - based on Great Aunt Gladys
  7. Life in Iowa on a Farm 1930-1960
  8. Collections of Essays about the Outdoors - Travel Journal?
  9. Something based on Grandma Hays’ journals
  10. Customer Service - short stories - Or Jobs I Have Had
  11. Spokane Parks History
  12. Gems from the Archives - short stories based on research

Memory of a Photograph (written March 19 2019)

In this one you are about 20 years old.  You are holding a large floppy hat, your hair is blown from the wind, you have a smile that lights up your face, it is summer, but not in the middle of summer, as the grass hasn’t started browning from days of relentless heat.  You are wearing shorts and a long sleeved shirt, so I am pretty sure you have just come from the field.  There is a dog standing beside you and the large tree that holds the rope swing is so small.  You can just make out the entrace to the root cellar/tornado shelter behind you and then in the background you can make out the larger barn and the smaller sheds - everything is painted in the brighter blue.  I often wonder who took the photograph.  I am guessing it was grandpa - he was always the photographer.  I also am curious if you are pregnant with mom in the picture or not - but your face is not lined with the ups and downs of life with its hardship, grief, adventure, pain, happiness, l...

Making Hard Decisions

  COVID has been hard on all of us - and it has been so hard for me to decide exactly where I land with COVID. I know people who have family and friends who have died from COVID - I know people with family and friends who have gotten really sick from COVID and survived. In the beginning I was one of those people - who thought, well this is a disease like any other disease. The best you can do is make sure you are doing your best - the cards will fall as they may. Which for those who have lost someone may seem rather callous and detached.  I definitely suffered mentally from the isolation in the beginning during our shut down - the combination of having to work from home and spending a lot more time with my husband - that was hard. It strained our marriage, it strained my relationships with others and most of all it strained my relationship with myself. I turned 50 this year - and I had plans. I was planning to meet my mom in Iowa and work on our genealogy. I had plans to atten...
